The Horse Trials were last run at Powderham in 1999. The XC has been uprated & designed by Eric Winter & Simon Bere.

There were 17 fences on Intermediate reflecting technical elements of the fences.

The log to skinny Owl house causing a lot of run outs & claimed Ollie Townend. The second part was on a slight angle, which meant that the first part had to be ridden accurately to set up for the second. Also being on a downward slope meant that control was needed. Eric Winter was commentating on Sunday, adding yet another string to his bow.

Eric was asked about the course being twisty towards the end. He doesn’t like to see the horses going too flat & too fast at the finish as this can lead horses to have joint problems. Also it keeps the riders concentrating.

His best line though was “ It’s like commentating at Badminton, isn’t it ” - as Lucinda Fredericks & Headley Britannia headed off on the cross country.
