Brean Stages Rally 2008
David Kynaston & Andy Russell from Exeter Motor Club retained the winners trophy in the Brean Stages Rally at the weekend in their Audi A3 Quattro. 86 entries tackled a total of 12 stages over the 2 days round the tight roads in Brean Leisure Park in the event organised by Weston-super-Mare Motor Club. Kynaston & Russell had a 5 second lead after the first 2 stages, but Karl Broad & Roger Grant in their Metro 6R4 had got the gap down to just a second by the end of Saturday. Sadly they managed to snap the steering arm on Sunday, & 2006 winners Steve & Yvonne Furzeland took 2nd place in their Subaru Impreza WRC.
Dave Parnell & Pete Bold in the No.7 car, & Kerry Michael & Mark Phillips in the No.18 car were having a battle in their Ford Escort Mk1’s & were never more than a few seconds apart. They finished on exactly the same time & were rewarded with 3rd & 4th places overall .
2005 Winners Duncan Holder from Mark & his co-driver Nick Reeves from Ilminster were hampered by fuel starvation on Saturday & fought their way back up from 15th to 7th place.
This is the 12th running of the event which is the first round of the ASWMC 2008 Sealed Surface Rally Championship & so far £36,000 has been raised for charity in total & this year the event is supporting West Country Motorsport Rescue. This year’s title sponsor is UK Farm Finance Ltd based in Highbridge.
Leading Lady Driver was Burnham-on-Sea Motor Club’s Nikki Peskett & Kate Drake in their Peugeot 205 Gti who finished in 34th spot, just 2 places ahead of a hard charging Danielle Furzeland & Russell Smaldon who had been hampered by engine probems in their Ford Escort on Saturday.
There were 54 finishers, the last being Leanne Harvey & Andrew Street in their Peugeot 205, it was Leanne’s first rally as a driver & she received a lot of encouragement from the mashals.
