Larkhill Horse Trials 2008
With many events being cancelled due to flooding or snow many people were very keen to get a run at Larkhill. There was a problem, however, when the promised medical cover failed to materialise for the cross country, it was only due to a lot of luck & frantic phoning around that an army ambulance was dispatched from Windsor & the cross country could get under way, although it started 2 hours later than planned.
There was a full day of Pre-Novice & Novice sections to get through with around 300 entries, all credit is due to everyone for ensuring that time was made up particularly during the change of course which took under 15 minutes to switch from Pre-Novice to Novice.
Apart from the icy wind which affected everybody, some of the runners in the Novice were finding it difficult riding into the low sun on the outward leg. There was also a sneaky bit of course designing where two parallel hedges at fence 4 put the riders on a line to fence 6, where some realised that they should have veered left to take the Toothbrush at fence 5.
Kitty Boggis secured a Novice win on Walk On Fire, which followed on from her recent success at Somerley Park. Kitty only narrowly beat Emily Young-Jamieson by 3.2 time penalties on the cross country. Emily is riding Sandalford who is owned by Clayton & Lucinda Fredericks. Emily rode for the North Cornwall Pony Club & now grooms for the Fredericks. She has been getting some impressive results on Sandalford, having taken over ther ride from Clayton at the beginning of the year.
Clayton Fredericks had a Pre-Novice win first time out on new ride Brookleigh finishing on his dressage score of 22. Clayton was 3rd & 6th at Fontainebleau & has got 2 entries for Badminton.
Emily King is now busy following in her Mum’s footsteps having moved both of her rides up to Pre-Novice level, the best being 12th on King Joules, aptly named after Mary’s sponsor.
